Coins are taken from U.S. Mint original packaging, carefully placed with gloves in 2×2 Cowens or Guardian flip holders, and shipped. Proof coins receive the highest quality strike possible and can be distinguished by their sharpness of detail and brilliant, mirror-like surface. These mirror-like finishes are called Cameo or Deep Cameo. Unlike circulating coins, proof coins display brilliant backgrounds, with frosted, sculpted foregrounds. Circulating (business strike) coins are not perfect as marks, dings, and blemishes occur in the machine minting and shipping process.
