These popular silver collectibles are struck at the West Point Mint. The classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman featured on the coin’s obverse has long been a collector favorite. Thanks to technological advancements in the design and minting process, it now encompasses some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible. A completely new reverse (tails) design was introduced in 2021. To give the new coins an added level of security, they have also been updated with enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation. The obverse (heads) features a refreshed depiction of Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The United States Mint returned to its original historical assets to render a closer reflection of Weinman’s original vision that includes the addition of his traditional artist mark. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2022.” The new reverse (tails) design features an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch, as if to add it to a nest. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." Each coin bears the “W” mint mark reflecting its striking at the West Point Mint. To highlight the new design, the coin is encapsulated and placed in an elegant black presentation box adorned with the United States Mint seal, with an outer sleeve incorporating an image of the (reverse) design. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity bearing an image of the refreshed obverse design. While the United States Mint releases several varieties of the American Silver Eagle every year, the Burnished American Silver Eagle is struck using special burnished planchets, giving the coin an elegant matte finish to the delight of collectors worldwide. Struck at the West Point mint and bearing its “W” mint mark, these modern silver issues are beloved for their beautiful, satiny finish and traditionally low mintages. 2022 is also notably just the second year the recently debuted Type 2 design has ever appeared on a Burnished Silver Eagle! Traditionally Low Mintages The Burnished Silver Eagle traditionally has a lower mintage annually than either the Brilliant Uncirculated or recent West Point Proof versions, an undeniable draw for savvy collectors. For example, in 2019, the Burnished Silver Eagle mintage made up less than 40% of the West Point Proof and less than 1% of the Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagle mintages. Type 2 Burnished Silver Eagles In 2022, the Type 2 design appears for just the second time ever on a Burnished Silver Eagle. The Type 2 design is characterized by the new Eagle Landing design on its reverse and the inclusion of designer Adolph Weinman’s initials on its obverse. Collectors can also enjoy an enhanced security feature in the form of an anti-counterfeit reeded edge variation that appears on every coin.
