Description: Fully titled, African Rhythms : The Autobiography of Randy Weston, Composed by Randy Weston, Arranged by Willard Jenkins. Published by Duke University Press in 2010. There is no edition identification, but also no information of it being a later edition or printing, so I will assume this is a FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY BOTH RANDY WESTON AND WILLARD JENKINS. Randy Weston flat-signed on the first free red endpaper, and Willard Jenkins INSCRIBED, DATED (1/1/11; book published in 2010) AND SIGNED TO "LOU". The book was purchased from the estate of Dr. Lewis W. Marshall Sr. He was a physician who specialized in internal medicine and infectious diseases, who was 79 when he passed in 2014. He lived and worked in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Dr. Marshall also taught at Howard University’s medical school from 1970 to 1975 and was a guest lecturer in the university’s microbiology department from 1978 until 2007. I have purchased a number of signed books from this estate on topics of black interest, and have posted them. I believe the "Lou" in the Willard Jenkins inscription was to Dr. Lewis Marshall. The signatures have not been authenticated, but the Randy Weston signature is very consistent with others found online. The book is in NEAR FINE CONDITION. The dust jacket with no wear, fully intact including price. Pristine black cloth boards with no wear, clear gilt spine titling. No further markings in 326 clean and solidly bound pages, with a center section of photos. On Randy Weston from Wikipedia: "Randolph Edward "Randy" Weston (April 6, 1926 – September 1, 2018) was an American jazz pianist and composer whose creativity was inspired by his ancestral African connection. Weston's piano style owed much to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, whom he cited in a 2018 video as among pianists he counted as influences, as well as Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Earl Hines. Beginning in the 1950s, Weston worked often with trombonist and arranger Melba Liston. Described as "America's African Musical Ambassador", Weston once said: "What I do I do because it's about teaching and informing everyone about our most natural cultural phenomenon. It's really about Africa and her music." On Willard Jenkins found online: "Willard Jenkins serves as Artistic Director of the DC Jazz Festival. A graduate of Kent State University, Willard has served in many capacities within the academic, arts, media and entertainment industries acting as a consultant, arts administrator, artistic director, writer, journalist, broadcaster, educator and oral historian... He is a skilled interviewer having conducted in-depth oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Institution, the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and the Weeksville Heritage Center. Willard is the author of the 2010 book African Rhythms, the autobiography of NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston." B128
