Description: My late sister Betsy had a crafts store in Pittsburgh, PA and featured artisans from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. She ADORED Eldreth Pottery and what she didn't sell in her shop, she brought home to her apartment. This is a particularly wonderful one, with six pairs of cherries on the stem surrounding a bejeweled red center. The cherries are "painted" with blush and shadow and light for dimension. The edges and veins of each pair of green leaves on each stem are nicely incised. The rim of yellow "balls" and another circle of yellow around the red center are 3D. For more than 50 years, David Eldreth -- who passed away in July, 2023 -- and his wife Faye specialized in bringing back the old pottery techniques of salt-glazing and redware, right in the eastern Pennsylvania area where he was raised. They made their work and their store a regional and national phenomenon, overseeing up to 40 potters at one point. (I suspect he did this plate because there are no initials of one of the potters, which was typical.) David Eldreth stepped away from full-time ceramics in 2017 at age 72 to devote his time to painting and travel. You can see some of his paintings online.
