The U.S. Postal Service issued this 3¢ Silver Coffeepot pane of 20 self-adhesive stamps on September 16, 2005 at the MILCOPEX Stamp Show in Milwaukee, WI. It's the sixth in the American Design Series of low value definitive stamps (depicting Early American decorative arts masterpieces). The design is from a watercolor and gouache painting by Tania Lee of Washington, DC. This stamp features the artist's simplified rendering of a pear-shaped silver coffeepot with a carved wood handle. The artist based her design on a silver coffeepot made in Philadelphia around 1786 by the Richardson brothers (Joseph Jr. and Nathaniel). The Richardsons, from a long line of silversmiths, worked as partners from 1777 to 1790. The coffeepot was presented to Margaret Rawle when she married Isaac Wharton in 1786. Both newlyweds came from eminent Philadelphia families. Her initials (MR) are engraved on the body of the coffeepot but do not appear on the stamp, since the artist simplified the painting so it would reproduce well at the small size required for the stamps.
