Description: Came from my father's estate, he was big on Collecting China Trade Paintings and Export Porcelain Silks etc. These are 2 scenes of the Boca Tigris. This was the way in and out of Canton the most important trading port during the China Trade era 1700 to 1847. Here is some history of Boca Tigris. Bocca Tigris, also known as Tiger's Mouth, is a narrow straitin the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province, China, near Humen Town. It's located about 40 miles from the Pearl River's mouth, where the river narrows from 15 miles wide to 2 miles. The strait separates Shiziyang in the north, Lingdingyang in the south, and Jiuzhouyang at the southern tip of the estuary. Bocca Tigris was the entrance to Canton, China's only trading city, and ships would stop there to receive the mandarin's seal before continuing. The strait is characterized by forts that form the "teeth" of the "tiger's mouth", and the channel between the Wantong and Annanghoy sides is only 750 yards wide. The estuary is regularly dredged to keep it open for ocean vessels.
