Description: Baron Georges Cuvier was a French scientist and zoologist, sometimes referred to as the "father of paleontology". Cuvier was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century and his work is considered to be one of the foundations of the study of Natural History. He was one of the first scientists to suggest the earth had been dominated by reptiles, rather than mammals, in prehistoric times. Baron Cuvier is honored by having streets named after him in most major French cities, and Rue Cuvier in Paris runs next to the French Museum of Natural History and The Paris Botanical Gardens. His is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. These works are from a collection by Baron Georges Cuvier first sent to the Royal Printing House of France from 1816-1829, They were then published in Italian in 1837 by Batelli & Sons. Turpin was one of the greatest natural history painters of his time. Largely self taught, he was inspired by the botanical painter Poiteau whom he met in Santo Domingo. Turpin was stationed there in the French army & Poiteau was a plant collector for the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
