Offered here are TWO rare original pastel courtroom sketches, portraits by artist Pat Davies of the groundbreaking young female prosecutor Jill Wine-Volner (now Jill Wine-Banks), drawn during the Watergate hearings. They are original large 14 by17 inch pastel drawings on thick drawing paper from spiral bound tablets. They may never have been published and are not signed. Jill Wine-Banks is the author of the 2020 book, “THE WATERGATE GIRL - My Fight for Truth and Justice Against a Criminal President,” published by Henry Holt and Company. (Book not included.) As the only female prosecutor in the Watergate hearings, Wine-Banks shouldered much responsibility in her historic role, blazing a path and setting an example for women and girls. She caught a key witness in a lie about erasure of the infamous missing 18-1/2 minutes from Nixon’s audio recordings, which helped reveal to the nation the crimes of its president, a pivotal point in the hearings. But at the time she felt empathy for the witness, Nixon’s dedicated personal secretary Rose Mary Woods, who was taking a fall for the president in lying for him. Many historic parallels may be found concerning a recent former president. Personal and intimate, these remarkable portraits capture a key participant in a focal point of American history. They have a few penciled notes and dates at edges (see photos), and smudges and minor yellowing from age. Wine-Banks was also the first female General Counsel of the US Army and Executive Director of the American Bar Association. Artist Pat Davies was one of the few artists allowed at the Watergate hearings, and worked for the Daytona Beach times.
