2 EXTINCT Bees Sticking Tongues Out with Water Enhydro in Dominican Amber Fossil

Description: This large, 13.3 gram fully polished and gem quality amber fossil from the mines in the Dominican Republic contains 2 stingless bees (genus Proplebeia, species dominicana, now extinct) that were caught with their tongues (proboscii) sticking out! It is like as if they were having the last word on the resin that engulfed them millions of years ago.One of the bees is next to a twig that has a worker ant that appears to be sitting on it. There is also an ancient water bubble enhydro in this amber fossil.Enhydros are water bubbles that contain trapped air bubbles that can be seen moving as the piece is turned. Geological studies have dated the water in this enhydro to be between 17 and 20 million years old!These particular bees are no longer seen in the Dominican Republic or Haiti as this particular species is confirmed to be extinct. Stingless bees are the most common bee found in Dominican amber. They would collect resin from the amber tree (Hymenaea protera, now extinct) in order to build their nests. Hence, they would often get caught. Rarely, stingless bees can be found with resin balls on their hind legs. I very rarely come across bees with resin.This piece originated from the Dominican Republic. The piece itself weighs 13.3 grams and has approximate dimensions of 4.1 cm length, 2.4 cm width, and 1.5 cm height. NOTE: 2.54 cm is approximately 1 inch. The saltwater test claims that real amber will float in saltwater while fake amber will sink.However, many amber sources or even specimens will not float in saltwater as their botanical (plant) composition as well as fossil inclusions are such that they are more dense than saltwater and so sink.
