Ernest Hemingway " For Whom The Bells Toll"- Considered Hemingway's best Novel- his account of the Spanish Civil War- numerous movies evolved including Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and more recent Hemmingway and Gellhorn ( Nicole Kidman), Hemingway Third Wife.While Charles Scribner's Sons, Publishers, highlight a First Edition Book during the period of publication 1940 with an A on the publication date page, the following unusual characteristic must be noted with respect to this book ( Photos for each are above)- - The Cover is in Greyish black color in sort of fabric like covering on with side of cover "For Whom the bell Tolls Hemingway" in different colors including White lettering. - The Title page of the Covering states Title and below is figure of a quill pen with signature of Ernest Hemingway (Note the Color of the Book is not light blue but a Grey or blackish color with blue line separating signature.- The first printed page contains the title of the Novel only. -The Next printed page states "ERNEST HEMINGWAY then followed by a leaf with title of book and bottom of page "Charles Scribner's Son New York". -The Next page contains dedication "This is for Martha Gellhorn" ( Hemingway's Third Wife)with 1940 copyright date "Ernest Hemingway, United States.- Next page restates title. There are 507 pages. The condition of the book is very good except somemarks on back of book. While I would like to believe that this is a First Edition and more valuable, After many hours of research( See last)photo) I simply do not know except that I believe it is at least an early Edition. The dedication page to Gellhorn, the color of the book binding, the cover color, and the number of pages adds to the mystery. Note that Charles Scribner was a personal friend of Hemmingway and perhaps this was a special edition. Note also that Hemingway married Gellhorn on November 22,1940 and Associate Press indicated that he dedicated his novel to her published "last month". Maybe you can solve this !
