Description: 2 1940s ALBERT HUIE Woodcut Genre Prints MONDAY MORNING & IN THE WOODS Jamaica This is a lot of two vintage woodcut prints by Albert Huie, the artist widely considered to be the father of Jamaican painting. Born in Falmouth, Jamaica in 1920, he had a long, successful career until his death in 2010. These two delightful genre scenes, titled "In the Woods" and "Monday Morning," were created in the 1940's. They depict scenes of daily life -- chopping logs in the forest and doing laundry. Both prints are signed "AHuie" in pencil in the lower right and titled in the lower left. The print area is 7 1/4" by 9 1/2," and the sheet, 9 3/4" by 12." I purchased these in the early 1990's at an estate sale and had them reframed. Both prints have some age-related yellowing (or toning) from age and from the mat. I've tried to capture this accurately in my photos. The top portion of "Monday Morning" is slightly more toned that the bottom half. It's slightly more toned overall than "In the Woods." "Monday Morning" has slight paper thinning at the top half inch of the sheet where tape once held the print in place. "Monday Morning" also has a very minor, short crease just below the clothesline. "In the Woods" has a watermark and a hint of foxing in the lower left. These are charming, highly collectable prints by Caribbean artist, Albert Huie.
