Description: Two (2) cabinet card photographs of a railroad train accident and a railroad depot in Woodland, Illinois, by McAdam of Milford, Illinois, dated 1895. The two views are both identified on the back in blue ink as Woodland, Ill., 1895, with the one view including also “Dad is boy in light cap just in front of engine.” That view shows a group of some twenty men and one boy posing for their photograph in front of a locomotive with a badly damaged front end. It may have rear ended the box car to the right of the group. A depot building stands behind them. The sign on the side reads American Express Co. The cars have L.E. & W. painted on them—Lake Erie & Western Railroad. The other view shows more than two dozen men posing for their photograph on and around the ruins of a coal car. The coal car and a boxcar have Chicago & Eastern painted on them—the Chicago & Eastern Railroad went through Woodland. It looks like the coal car was full when it derailed and spilt its load. I suspect these two photographs show the same train wreck, though it may have involved two trains. I could not find out anything about a railroad accident at Woodland in 1895. The two cabinet cards are in only good or better condition with light to moderate wear and light soiling. Each one has a bit of one corner missing, and both show wear and rubbing around the edges. The photographs exhibit good to very good tonal range and show very good detail. The photographs both have light scuff marks on the surface. A nice pair of railroad photographs and an interesting bit of Woodland IL history!
