Description: From my librarian grandparents' collection of antique books is this college Little Blue Book #208. First Edition!! This is one of the seminal works around Margaret Sanger's trailblazing efforts to have access to birth control an established right in the US. Of historical note is that in 1921 (the same year of this published debate) she founded the American Birth Control League, which later became Planned Parenthood Federation of America. It is in great condition considering its age; shows normal wear and tear and fading on the cover. All inside pages are bound and intact. I do have other antique books from this era, as well as other Little Blue Books, for sale on eBay. Please visit my store for the other listings. Thanks for viewing! -------------------------- (source: Biblio.com) Margaret Sanger, Winter Russell. "Debate on Birth Control". People's Pocket Series No. 208, Edited by E. Haldeman-Julius. Haldeman-Julius Company: Girard, Kansas. 1921. 63 pages. 5 x 3.5 in. Very rare first edition copy of Sanger's 1921 Debate on Birth Control against Winter Russell. Margaret Sanger was committed to ensuring contraceptive access to all women, regardless of U.S. Comstock laws banning the production or distribution of materials related to sex. In 1921, Sanger, already a famous advocate for sexual education and family planning, founded the American Birth Control League; she held a public debate with the intention of bringing birth control into the mainstream consciousness. In this debate, Sanger succinctly argues against Winter Russell's fire-and-brimstone fear-mongering and provides the true facts about infant and maternal mortality and child labor in the United States, which could be alleviated by birth control. This pamphlet is very rare, with no copies shown among institutional collections according to OCLC Worldcat. Average to good condition with original paper covers. Covers are browned and lightly thumb-soiled with a small chip and partial separation along the staple-bound spine. Internally, the pages are lightly browned. A very important work that shows both the science understanding and humanitarian concerns that propelled the birth control movement in the early 20th century. (source: Biblio.com)
