Description: Rare lithograph by 19th-century American printer J.H. Bufford, an evocative view of the Indian Pass from Lake Henderson, in the High Peaks region (named in 1826 after David Henderson, one of the founders of the Elba Iron Works near Lake Placid). Print derives from the seminal 1838 publication "Views of the Adirondack Region," a key book on the iconography of the Adirondacks. The Bufford prints in the book were originally issued as illustrations for a New York State Assembly document collating the reports of the State Natural History Survey and of a report by geologist E. Emmons (it was Emmons 1838 report that introduced the name "Adirondacks" for the region). Lithograph printed on fragile paper with faint fold line to center (as originally issued), and measures 9.25" by 7.75". This print is in the collection of the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Very scarce - a copy of the 1838 book with all of Bufford's lithographs is for sale online now for $12,500. In very good condition overall - no tears or dampstaining, very faint soiling and foxing to top margin. From a rare maps web site: "J.H. Bufford (1810-1870) founded one of the longest-lived and most prolific of the early American lithographic firms. After apprenticing from 1829-34 at Pendleton’s Lithography in Boston, he established his own business in New York City, but in 1840 marriage and opportunity brought him back to Boston. By 1845 he was once again running a firm under his own name, acting as lithographer, printer and/or publisher on everything from job printing to portraits to city views and maps, and continued to do so until his death in 1870. His sons continued in the lithographic business until the 1890s. Buyer to pay for item plus shipping.
