Description: See photos for details and condition. Engineer and Lumberman Elisha Kent Kane was the owner of this coat approximately 1880. He was born in Philadelphia in 1856. He lived near Kane Pennsylvania where he built railroads. He was the nephew of the famous explorer of the same name. He died in McKean County PA in 1935, in the town of Kushequa. Hamlin Township. Mr Kane gave this coat to my great grandfather, who was Mr Kane’s head carpenter. It has been in our family for over 100 years. It was worn as a costume! And it has been aging in storage. It is dusty and has age stains. The points of the lapels have worn out. The wool of the coat is surprisingly thick and supple. The lining is in beautiful condition for its age, see the sleeves are lined in white. We believe it was worn for meetings and important events in the 1880s and 1890’s and 1900’s. It was made in NYC at Browning, King and Co. it could be called a late Victorian Frock coat or a Regency era coat.
