Description: 19 C Victorian Child's Ladder Back Chair Woven Seat 5 Layers of OLD PAINT From a local estate, this 19th C child's ladder back chair is larger than most child-size chairs (would fit a 5 - 10 year old) & was handed down for several generations in the same family, dating back to the late 1800s when the grandmother was a child. Features a woven seat with a different weave on top than on the bottom & 3 ladder back rungs. While the top layer of paint is white, we suspect the chair may even be older than late19th century given the 5 different layers of paint, though we are not experts in dating chairs. Some may describe this chair as primitive, Shaker, Pennsylvania chair, New England chair, etc. There are a 5 different layers of paint we have seen: The oldest colors seems to be a black and a deep barn red - which of these is older is hard to discern with the naked eye - but have a look at the closeup on the chair leg. We think the black paint is the oldest. These layers are followed by a layer of green (seen on the legs of the chair) that was popular in the Victorian era. There's a light robin's egg blue (seen on the crest of the top ladder back splat & also "bleeding through" the latest top layer of paint - which is white.
