In 1999, the United States Mint Set was expanded to include the first five quarter-dollar designs of the 50 States Quarters series. The additional coins were included with the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, and Kennedy Half Dollar. In 2000, the Sacagawea Dollar, also known as the Native American dollar or the golden dollar, was introduced and added to mint sets. In 2004, two different designs were issued for the five-cent piece, as part of the Westward Journey Nickel series to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase and the exploration of the western territories by explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. In 2005, the second and final year of the Westward Journey Nickel series was included in the mint set. The 2005 set also contains the first year of the "Satin Finish" type strikes offered by the US Mint. In 2007, the Presidential $1 coin series debuted. New packaging was introduced for the 2007 mint sets with the coins sealed in a blister and displayed in a folder. In 2009, the four-coin Lincoln Bicentennial coins were struck and added to the mint sets along with six quarter-dollar coins honoring the District of Columbia and the five U.S. Territories. The mint set also contains the first year of the Sacagawea dollar coins reverse re-design. Uncirculated Mint Set Issued since 1947, US Mint Sets contain one coin of each denomination from every mint that struck them for circulation (coins in US Mint Sets are typically from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, though some years include special coins from the San Francisco or West Point Mints). Uncirculated Mint Sets are packaged especially for collectors and issued in limited quantities. From 1965-2006, US Mint Sets were issued in traditional Pliofilm packaging, with each mint's coins sonically sealed in protective pockets. Uncirculated coins are struck once on special presses using greater force than circulating coins, producing a sharp, intricately detailed image and the satin finish was introduced in 2005. When the Presidential dollars debuted in 2007, new folder packaging was introduced that contains coin specifications and allows a clear view of the obverse, reverse and edge inscriptions.
