Fleer suffered a significant backlash for the finish of the base cards; looking back 22 years later it was actually innovative. Fleer stated that the cards were done in this format to facilitate getting them autographed in person. This was the last set issued using only the Fleer name during Fleer's independent run; beginning in 1998-99 they would call the set Fleer Tradition for the main set, or Fleer Platinum, which also served as the main set for several years. However, Upper Deck did issue three sets under just the Fleer nameplate in the late 2000s.
