Description: Crunch! Crunch! How about an upgrade on traditional Cracker Jack? Borden manufactured this 1994 vintage tin canister to ship Nutty Deluxe, their product featuring butter toffee, glazed popcorn clusters, almonds and pecans. The bright blue and gold roof-shaped tin features mascots Sailor Jack and his dog Bingo on the front, along with pictures of the popcorn clusters. The striped canister contained 7 delicious ounces of butter toffee, for a tasty treat. The Cracker Jack process actually started much earlier -- 1872 -- when Frederick Rueckheim began selling popcorn out of a street cart on Chicago’s Fourth Avenue. With the help of Louis, his brother, Frederick perfected a combination of popcorn, peanuts and molasses. The mascots, Jack and Bingo (photo #1), were introduced as early as 1916 and registered as a trademark in 1919. After a hit showing at the 1893 World’s Fair, the product took its name of Cracker Jack from “That’s a crackerjack!” which was a common phrase at the time, meaning something was high in quality. In 1908, Jack Norworth, an entertainer who had never been to a baseball game, penned the now-iconic song with a reference to Cracker Jack ("buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack"). While the product mention didn’t come through any deal with the snack company, it became a godsend for sales as the song rocketed up the charts, forever linking Cracker Jack and America's love of baseball. This elegant canister, which measures 9" x 5.75" x 3.75", is in excellent vintage condition. With no signs of wear, and a shiny interior (photo # 5), this Nutty Deluxe tin is ready to store your latest snack.
