Description: 1994 was welcomed in the UK with the very first Hootenanny hosted by Jools Holland. The year also marked several significant anniversaries, and the 1994 annual proof set from The Royal Mint features eight coins with a range of special, symbolic designs in honor of these. The large Two Pound coin celebrates 300 years since the establishment of the Bank of England with a design by Leslie Durbin. The One Pound coin to its left marks the beginning of a new series of designs. The first four coins of this denomination in British currency were designed by Leslie Durbin and featured floral elements of each of the four Home Nations. In 1994, the new design of a lion with double treasure represents Scotland and will be followed by other heraldic designs for England, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The Fifty Pence marks another anniversary, this one the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings of 1944. Artist John Mills depicts the beginning of that famous day with a design featuring planes and ships. Alongside these special coins, are a Twenty Pence, a Ten Pence, a Five Pence, a Two Pence, and a One Pence. They are all struck in the same alloys as regular circulating coinage, such as nickel-brass and cupro-nickel, but finished to a higher proof standard with carefully monitored conditions, blanks, and dies. These coins are presented in an acrylic case which means both the obverse and reverse of the coins are visible without removing them from their protective casing and risking damage.
