Christening ceremonies were recently held at the Shipyards Division of Avondale Industries, Inc., the third in a series of five Landing Ship Dock (LSD) vessels being built for the U.S. Navy. The Tortuga is scheduled for delivery in July of 1989. The Tortuga is named for a group of seven small islands in the Gulf of Mexico, was launched earlier this year as a precautionary action during the threat of Hurricane Gilbert. The LSD ship is a multi-functional ship capable of a wide range of amphibious assault operations for the Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. The primary mission of Tortuga is to carry, launch and dock up to four Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCAC) vessels. In combination with the LCACs, the LSD ships will allow Marines, through heavy surf and beach obstacles, to be landed in potential trouble spots around the world.Photo measures 10 x 8inches.
