Harley’s most radical fusion of past and present, code name FXSTS, was going to be real dead-of-night,eyes-only stuff. But leaving the anonymity of Cycle's garageunder cover of darkness, our manlooked in his rear-view mirror and sawtrouble: Six pumped-up, raked-out, tri-ple-chromed, lacquer-dippedchopperbikes had fallen in behind. The FXSTS is that kind of motor-cycle—it will draw the Harley faithfulin its wake for blocks, trying for alook. Even in the canyons, riding theSpringer with its great chromium forkthrust out in front is like touring withGrace Jones hanging on the pillion—people notice. The bikers we eluded with somedark alleys and a deft right turn. Forthe rest, the FXSTS remained justanother chrome-custom wonder. Butthis Springer—officially designated asa 1988 1/2 model—is brand new andstone stock. The first "S” in FXSTS stands for“Softail.” That you knew. The secondmeans "Springer," as in "Factory Springer," somethingunseen on stock H-Ds since 1949, when the last springer, orKinematic front end, gave way to progress and the Hydra-Glide telescopic fork.Scanning forward from the rakish, hot-rod flip of the rearfender, the FXSTS looks much like the standard SoftailFXST: 16-inch tire and wire rear wheel suspended by atriangulated steel swing arm and twin shocks running par-allel under the engine, creating the illusion of a hardtail rearend. Like the ST, the STS features a lowboy seatingposition—the saddle hovers barely two feet off the street. From the steering head back, the FXSTS is pure Softail: theFat Bob fuel tank spreads in a pool of pinstriped paint abovethe 80-inch Evolution V-twin engine.Up front, it’s all Springer; or, more accurately, the FXSTSsteers through a leading-link front end. And if you think theornate, chromed-plated fork looks like something out of aold-timey Harley catalog, then pat yourself once for partsrecognition—Vice-President and chief stylist Willie G. David-son charged both engineering and design departments withre-creating an exact replica of the 1948 H-D fork thatmeasured up to contemporary cruiser standards. That’s nomean feat. After computer-aided-design studies, finite ele-ment analyses and miles of testing, Harley engineers foundthemselves close to where their predecessors had left off, which is not as unbelievable as it sounds, considering thatthe original fork development began in 1908 and evolvedinto final form in 1948 (plus a few 1949 units)... And much more!
