To this day, I amsure that is why “Ken’s Cycles” onthe southwest side of Chicago closed. The building remains at 26th andCalifornia, as well as the sign, but nosign of Ken for the last thirty years.Usual questions to this poor guy afterschool every day while he was tryingto earn a living were kind of like:“How much is this Bantam?,” “Howfast will it go?,” “Can it beat a Hoff-man 175?,” “Do they have buddyseats, streamers?” “Can I have moreliterature?” “My dad will be in nextweek to buy one.” No wonder thatBSA went out of business. Can youpicture a ten year old badgering aHonda or Kawasaki dealer nowadays? The salesmen in their blazers?I had it bad even at ten. I studiedCycle magazine every month andcould recite all about the “Brute”drag bike, Bonneville, Francis-Barnett 197cc bikes and just name it.My “doodlebug scooter” and I werebikers. The doodlebug even had sad-dlebags and handlebar streamers! Now just where does a ten year oldon the south side of Chicago (alleysonly — no streets allowed) go that heneeds saddlebags? That is anotherstory. One day, after a rough day offifth grade, I went to “Ken’s,” and itwas there!A Goldie was in his showroom. Now this is an old time dealer. Roomfor four bikes, a showcase with blackand white motorcycle hats, streamersPage 20for handlebars, chrome studs foryour boot heels, chrome letters foryour belt, emblems, decals - really, just the important stuff. Not a lot ofroom for silly things. Anyway, theGoldie was in the center of the tenfoot showroom. It was perfect! The only better thing in theworld was a Vincent Black Shadow, but nobody had ever seen one. Ashop on Stoney Island Avenue soldthem, but that was a million milesaway to a ten year old and none evercame into our neighborhood anyway,so they only existed in magazines. This Goldie was for real. Ken had it!It was parked next to the 125cc, palegreen, Bantam that I had hoped toget. Now, all of a sudden, the Ban-tam lost a lot of its lustre. As I walked up to it, I mostvividly remember that the top of thegas cap was throat high. At ten, I wasnot too big! I remember to this daythinking, “Nobody in the world isbig enough to ride that!’’Big British singles kind of ruledthe world for a long time. BSA, Nor-ton, Matchless, AJS and many othersall had their times. There was a timewhen 500cc was really big! Some650 twins existed, but they weremonsters, not necessarily faster thana Goldie or Manx Norton. 500cc ofhot single ruled. Today a 500 or 650is a toy, but in 1955, cars were justgetting into the high-performance erawith the first Chevrolet V-8. A goodGoldie could do a quarter in the 15’sand top out at about 112-115 mph.Really a contender at any stop lightor on the open road... And much more! 12364 RL- 12365
