Description: 1986 Topps #374 Steve Young rookie card graded Mint or Better 10 by BCCG. This is Steve Young’s first Topps card even though he was drafted in the USFL in 1984 and by the Buccaneers in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft. Young played collegiately at Brigham Young University from 1981-1983. He would lead the Cougars to an 11-1 record in 1983, winning the Davey O’Brien award and a unanimous All-American selection along the way. He would win the 1983 Holiday Bowl for BYU over Missouri with a last second touchdown catch. He finished second in the 1983 Heisman voting. He would be selected by both the USFL and the NFL Drafts in 1984. He would be selected by the Los Angeles Express with the 11th overall pick in the USFL Draft and by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 1st overall pick in the NFL Supplemental Draft in 1984. Young would be part of a star-studded Express team that would be in total disarray by the end of the season. Early in 1986, Young would buy out his contract with the Express and sign with the Buccaneers. He would spend two dismal seasons with them. He would be traded in 1987 to the 49ers after the drafting of Vinny Testaverde. He would be a backup to Joe Montana for four years. He would become the starter in 1991 after Joe Montana suffered an elbow injury in the 1990 NFC Championship game. He would have great success in 1991 but miss the playoffs. In 1992, he would win his first NFL MVP award with 3,465 passing yards and 537 rushing yards with an NFL-best 25 touchdown passes and a 107.0 passer rating. The starting job in San Francisco would stay his from then on with the trade of Montana in 1993 to the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1994, Young would win his second NFL MVP award and the Super Bowl MVP award, becoming only the seventh person to do so. He would retire in 1999 due to a plethora of injuries, primarily concussions. He would be sacked by Safety Aeneas Williams in the week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, this would be the last time he would play in the NFL, due to severe concussion he received. He would compile 2,667 completions with 33,124 passing yards and 232 touchdowns to 107 interceptions in the NFL regular season and 316 completions with 4,102 passing yards and 16 touchdowns to 22 interceptions in the USFL. His NFL post season stats were 292 completions with 3,326 passing yards and 20 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He would set or tie several NFL and team records during his career.
