Ballet is the art of the arduous, the triumph of will over pain. Detroiters have had a unique opportunity this week to sample some of the best of dance, with appearances by both the American Ballet Theater and the Alvin Ailey dancers. The performance of the American Ballet Theater's artistic director, Mikhail Baryshnikov, in particular, spurred us to ponder what is behind ballet's continuing appeal. Classical ballet is a more consuming profession than almost anything you can think of. Dancers typically begin serious study at the age of eight or nine, and thereafter sweat through daily classes ad practices, spending grueling hours exercising against a wooden rail or barre. Like all truly great artists, ballet stars must live for little else. But dancers like Baryshnikov make it all seem easy, those leg extensions, those circular spins, those leaps into the air in which dancers beat the calves of their legs together or cross their feet. The crowds clap and shout bravo and go home. Still, fine ballet performances, like other instances of high physical art, live on in the mind, reminding us that we are creatures of the body as well as the spirit, and that it is possible to hone bone and muscle into an instrument of breathtaking grace and strength. No wonder we wildly applaud.Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 04-07-1983.
