Nov. 5, 1981Notre Dame 35Georgia Tech 3 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- When Georgia Tech met Notre Dame last year, the Yellow Jackets were the decided underdog because of their dismal 1-7 record. Last season, the Irish were 7-0 and ranked first nationally when they faced Tech in Atlanta and were held to a surprising 3-3 tie. This year, Tech is again 1-7 heading into the game with the Irish, but Notre Dame is sporting a disappointing 3-4 mark. But Tech is again the underdog against an Irish club that has shown signs of coming to life in its last two games. First-year Coach Gerry Faust said his team has turned the corner after narrowly losing to USC 14-7 two weeks ago and handling Navy 38-0 last week. But he is still concerned about Tech. 'Georgia Tech's record may not look especially impressive, but all our players have to do is remember what happened last year. 'Tech had the same 1-7 record when Notre Dame went to Atlanta unbeaten and ranked number one and ended up with a 3-3 tie. I doubt if very many people on this football team have fogotten that game.' Tech Coach Bill Curry said revenge will be on the mind of the Irish against his club. 'We know they're waiting for us up there at Notre Dame. How would you feel if a 1-7 team had knocked you out of the No. 1 spot in the national rankings,' he said. 'We played our best football last season in that 3-3 tie but we haven't come close to that sort of performance since we beat Alabama.' Faust also pointed to Tech's lone victory -- an opening game win over nationally-ranked Alabama -- as indicative of the Yellow Jackets' upset potential. But Tech has lost seven straight since that upset and with Notre Dame finally having found a consistent offense, the Irish are still heavy favorites. Quarterback Blair Kiel is coming off his best game at Notre Dame, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another in the romp past Navy. He threw for 225 yards, completing 13-of-23. 'Blair seems to be playing with much more self assurance the last two weeks,' Faust said. 'He's more confident out there now and he hasn't thrown an interception while completing 25-of-46 attempts in his last two games.' Faust also shifted Tony Hunter to tight end and inserted Joe Howard to split end to bolster the offense. That allowed tailback Greg Bell to move to wingback and team up with starting tailback Phil Carter in the revised ND attack. Tech has been injury-plagued all season, especially at quarterback. Sophomore Stu Rogers, the third Tech quarterback to start this season, will get the nod against ND. His backup will be John Kearney, who started his freshman season as a wide receiver. 'This has been John's first week at full tilt,' Curry said. 'He was out early with a shoulder injury and then his kneecap came off. He's looking good.' Freshman tailback Robert Lavette, who has gained 584 yards, is the leading ground gainer. Defensively, the Irish are also coming off their best game. They held the Middies to 123 total yards and permitted only four plays in their own territory. Notre Dame has still not yielded a point in the first quarter in any game this season. Faust won't discuss a bowl bid for his team because the Irish still must play Miami and Penn State. 'But I think we've turned the corner for good. If we continue to play the way we have the last two weeks, we've got a shot at finishing 7-4,' Faust said. 'And that wouldn't be too bad when you look at the records around the rest of the country.'
