Peter “Pistol Pete” Maravich (June 22, 1947 - January 5, 1988) is considered by many as one of the greatest ball handlers and offensive forces in the history of the NBA. Maravich was taught the game by his father, professional player turned coach. Pete developed his skills incessantly and joined the high school’s varsity basketball team a year before he was old enough to attend the institution. It was in high school that he was named “Pistol” Pete for his unique shooting style that seemed to be drawn from his belt, as would be a revolver. Though eager to attend the University of West Virginia, Pete attended Louisiana State University playing for his father, head coach of the LSU Tigers basketball team. In his three seasons at LSU, Maravich set numerous school and NCAA records including the NCAA career scoring record with 3,667. In 1970, Pistol Pete averaged 44.5 points per games earning him the Naismith College Player of the Year Award, Helms Foundation, UPI, AP, USBWA and Sporting News Player of the Year Awards. The Atlanta Hawks took Pete as the third overall pick of the 1970 NBA Draft. Pete had an up-and-down first few seasons before settling in with the Hawks, though he did earn a spot on the 1971 NBA All-Rookie First Team and two All-Star Game selections. In 1974, Pete was traded to the upstart expansion New Orleans Jazz. The new NBA franchise struggled despite Maravich leading the league in the 1976-77 in field goal attempts (2,047), free throws (501) and total points (2,273). Pete earned three more All-Star selections in New Orleans as well as two All-NBA First Team selections. After six fruitless years in New Orleans and their new home of Utah, relocating in 1979, the Boston Celtics claimed the now-oft injured Maravich off the waiver wire where he would return to the playoffs. The Celts lost the Eastern Conference Finals to the Philadelphia 76ers led by Julius Erving and Pistol Pete retired at the end of the 1979-80 season due to nagging knee injuries. Pete finished his career with 15,948 points, 2,767 rebounds, 3,563 assists, 3,564 free throws and 6,187 field goals. Pete Maravich was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. Pete Maravich died of an undetected congenital heart defect while playing a pickup game in 1988. Pistol Pete was named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History list in 1996.
