Unlike lemmings, however,much of the migration from thenorth stopped short of the jellyfishpools because Speed Week wasmarred by several days of rain andcold weather.Florida was not about to gain areputation for being a completelyinhospitable host, however, so whenit really counted, the sun came outand cast welcome rays upon what isaffectionately known as “TheWorld’s Most Famous Beach.”All week the migration continuedand by the time the weekend rolledaround, Daytona was about readyto burst at its seams. Some hadcome for Speed Week, of course.They had come to see KennyRoberts and Steve Baker spinaround the International Speedwayin record times on their big-boreYamahas. Others had come simplyto escape the college campuses andoffices of the north that had beeninundated with snow and frigidtemperatures all winter long. But alot of people came to Daytona justto participate in the Fifth AnnualRat’s Hole Custom MotorcycleShow on the Boardwalk — a showso prestigious and interesting that itis perhaps the most renowned in theentire country.The 306 bikes entered in the Rat’sHole Show came from just aboutevery region in the Union exceptmaybe Alaska . . . and that’s onlybecause the Alaskans were too busyplugging holes in their pipeline toafford the traditional Florida springbreak.Big Daddy Rat — the sponsor ofthe show — has a flair forpageantry that would have madeWilliam Shakespeare proud.
