Kawasakibrought out their 500cc two-stroketriple, and of course Honda intro-duced the 750cc Four. Both set theindustry back on their respectiveears, but especially the Honda. Itwas filled with things that wentwhir, clank, whompa and otherweird sounds that most bikes didn’tmake.Until these two bikes, theJapanese motorcycle industrywasn’t taken seriously by the rest ofthe manufacturers. Many said thatthe Japanese could make smallmachines, but when it came to thebig-bores they couldn’t handle it.Boy, were they wrong. Today 85percent of the big bikes sold comefrom across that body of water toyour immediate west.The 750 Four started it, and aftera few years of its being around, wedecided to take a look at the latestversion and see what’s happened tothe "first” of the multis.For openers, it has slowed down.In a drag race the oldest versionswill put it to a ’74 model in a fairlybig way. What with the feds puttinga downer on performance and boost-ing the smog regulations, Hondahas had to use more restrictive muf-flers, a different air box, a muchmilder cam, and in general take theedge off the Four.
