They’ll tell you:faith, hope and.charity aredead, the world is crumblingall around. They’ll tel&Wyou: act like the other guy,he’s smart, belief is forthe suckers. Cynics rule, orso they’ll lead you tobelieve. In many ways, it’s,a bright guilty world. But The Louvin Brothers(Charlie and Ira) werealways there, standingapart, singing the .gospel, keeping the faith, remindingus of the way things oughtto be. For them, music meant ;singing the spirit and storyof their faith—and the-basic down-to-earth believ-ability of their songs andperformances has seldombeen equaled. They came from Alabama, born and raised on a smallfarm on the outskirts ofHeneager, a normal Dixiechildhood. Their father wasa sometime banjo picker, and the Louvin boys neverlacked music in their home.Back then, that meant thosegreat Southern gospels—’’Nearer My God To Thee,”’’This Little Light Of Mine"and "Swing Low, SweetChariot. ’’When they sang thosesacred words, the Louvinsmeant every one. That’s the way it alwayswas with The LouvinBrothers. Their music had asolid foundation, based onthe things they lived, learned and loved. They werehonest and unpretentious.Their art was "artless."They wrote and sang aboutthe world they knew—and thekind of life they believedin. The Louvins were verygood, because they sang fromtheir hearts and didn’t carewho knew it.Said Ira, several yearsbefore his tragic death (in1965): "Our compositions areauthentic^-which;||s the mainreasph/for their success."He was right. The LouvinBrothers were the realthing. When the Louvins first.started performing as a duo, they didn’t walk the goldenpath to success. Not rightoffC'the bat. Those were* hardtimes. You had to be good. And, if and when the breakcame, you had to be ready. When they were ready, theywent up to Chattanooga andwon an amateur talent con-test. First prize was a4 a.in. radio show on 250watt WDEF. The two brothershad to work first shift ina cotton mill, so theycould grab a couple hoursof sleep before they wenton the air.Working in the mill wasironic, because Charlie andIra got into show business, back home in Heneager, because it was "easier thanthe cotton fields." ThenWorld War II came along, andthe brothers had to put offtheir careers until that wasout of the way.Right after the war,Smilin’- Eddie Hill signedthem for WNOX’s "Mid DayMerry Go Round" radio-showout of Knoxville. By 1949,they were an establishedact .■ Then the Korean Warcame, and this time Charliewas drafted. When Capitol producer KenNelson finally heard one oftheir demos, the Louvinswere dividing their timeworking as mail clerks inthe Memphis Post Officeand performing on their ownlocal radio show. The Louvin Brothersworked together until 1964.They recorded many, manyalbums—all kinds, bothsacred and pure country. Finally, Charlie decidedto become a solo act. "Youknow how it is," he says,"after so much time you gettoo close, can’t acceptcriticism."On Father’s Day, 1965,Ira Louvin was killed in anautomobile accident inMissouri. Four days later,Charlie played the littletown where his brother haddied. He sang the gospelsongs the brothers hadalways performed together. This album is a collectionof the greatest gospel songsof the justly-legendaryLouvin BrothersThey endure. They alwayswill.
