Description: 1971 Press Photo Surface of Mars as seen from the Mariner 9 Space probe This is an original press photo. Pasadena, California. A partial lifting of the dust storm which has obscured Mars since Mariner 9 went into orbit in mid-November enabled to spacecraft to obtain this view of the surface from an elevation of 4000 miles on December 17. Scientists at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who released the picture today after computer enhancement, said it shows a plateau in the Phoenicis Lacus area about 17.5 degrees south of the Martian equator. They believe surface is covered by volcanic deposits which later were broken by faults. The fault valleys are about 1 1/2 miles across.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 12-29-1971.
