Soap Box Derby 1969. Jefferson County Soap Box Derby Champion Bill Burrus left today for what may be the biggest week of his life. He's off to the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, where he will compete with more that 250 boys from all over the United States and several foreign contries for $30,000 in scholarships. Decorating, above, the car that will carry BIll Burrus to the races, Dave Culwell, left, handing a display "cutout" of a racer to bill. The other boys are, left to right, Danny Burrus, Mike Culwell, Keith Sides and David Currus. Matt Wright, who finished fourth in the jefferson county Derby, also will make the trip. The Jefferson County race in June was sponsored by Lions Clubs of District 34-C, greater Birmingham Chevrolet dealers and the Birmingham News.Photo measures 9 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 8-17-1969.
