The blurb inside the jacket states about this book: 'a book that is undoubtedly a classic of art criticism, or, to be more exact, of a particular kind of art criticism…’ says Herbert Read in his Introduction ‘... A sensitive artist, an artist of genius, offers to the sociologist evidence far more reliable than mountains of historical documents... one cannot but admire a study of an artist's development pursued with such scrupulous scholarship and such passionate sympathy.'The author does not pretend that his study is an exhaustive appreciation of Goya's art. Its scope is purposely restricted to reconstructing the mental atmosphere, the moods and attitudes, and the conscious ideas he expressed in his work.Goya, writes Klingender, can only be understood as an artist if we study him against his social and political background. 'Against that wider setting with its clash of material forces and ideas I have attempted to reconstruct Goya's own outlook from what is known of his life and more especially from his paintings, etchings and drawings.'The pictorial dust jacket is intact.
