Description: For sale is an amazing 1967 SMS Kennedy Silver Half Dollars graded and certified by NGC as MS-67 which is incredibly high and rare for this coin! The Kennedy Half was minted abruptly in 1964 right after the assassination of President Kennedy. Kennedy Halves are still minted today, but only for collectors' sets, not for general circulation -- and haven't been since 2001. The only year they minted a 90% silver Kennedy Half was in 1964. Then in 1965 they switched mintage to 40% silver, also called "silver clad," which the coins in this set are. They minted silver clad Kennedys from 1965 to 1970. "SMS" stands for "special mint set." The Mint did not mint proof sets 1965 to 1967 and instead minted Special Mint Sets which had highly polished MS coins that sort of resembled proof coins, but weren't actually proof. These were considered SMS coins and are far more rare than the regular MS coins because they minted so few. It cannot be overstated how rare this coin is in MS-67 grade. Coins from this era were not particularly well struck coins so you typically find them in MS-61 or 62 at the highest. As you can see from the pics the coin is in absolutely amazing condition. It has that gorgeous MS finish you expect from high quality uncirculated coins. It has no toning at all and no major blemishes. This is an amazing coin to add to any Kennedy collection--or for anyone who just wants to own more gorgeous silver coins. Thanks!
