Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Up for auction is a fascinating illustrated hardcover anthology in Russian, called (in English) Prometheus and published by Young Guard in Moscow in 1967. With the help of Google Translate, I found this description of the publication on the title page: "Historical and Biographical Almanac of the Series 'Life of Remarkable People.'" It is a stated Volume 2 (with "2" appearing at the top of the black-cloth spine, above the word "PROMETHEUS" in Russian), and I believe there were at least 3 volumes of Prometheus. The paper-covered hard-bound title, which measures approximately 6-1/ inches wide by 8-1/2 inches high, comprises 368 pages and includes essays, articles, portraits, a diary, memories, letters, a bibliography, and much more, with the following mentioned on the title page (with the translations at times highly questionable, as is often the case with Google Translate, though it's a great help nonetheless with trying to sell Russian books when one doesn't know the language -- though I am familiar with Cyrillic letters):Pages of Lenin's AutobiographyNew Materials on Gogol and ChekhovLetter from ShalyapinEssays by Gaidar, SchweitzerMemoirs of ShelgunovNina Zarechnaya by Leonid Grossman (Nina was a character in Chekhov's play The Seagull, but I'm not sure this is actually an article on Nina by Grossman [1888-1965], a Russian literary critic, author, and professor who wrote a number of famous people's profiles for Prometheus)Chesterton's Essay"Perm Gods" (not sure what that means!) The next page lists the names of the "Editorial Team," and they are:M. P. AlekseevI. L. AndronikovD. S. DaninB. I. ZhutovsyI. S. IsakovP. L. KapitsaB. M. KedrovN. I. KonradY. N. Korotkov (editor)D. M. KukinA. A. SidorovK. M. SimonovS. D. SkazkinS. S. SmimovK. I. Chukovsky In addition to a number of portraits by Nathan Altman (1889-1970), a Ukrainian-born Jewish artist (see 6th, 7th, and 8th photos uploaded), there are also wonderful mid-century illustrations included throughout, as well as contemporary photographs and images of medieval and later sculpture. Some of the wonderful modern collage-like designs -- see the last four photos uploaded -- remind me of Monty Python graphics. And there are also some fascinating photographs and drawings of what appear to be African people, with the name Gilenson and title "The Good Man of Lambaréné" printed at the top -- this "good man," in fact, being the renowned doctor and author Albert Schweizer (1875-1965), and Lambaréné being the location of his hospital in Gabon, Africa. Please note that I've not double-checked the spelling of names mentioned above that were translated by Google Translate, but I wanted to give you a bit of information on the book and some examples of what's covered within. The overall condition of this vintage pictorial paper-covered title, with white-titled black cloth at the spine and continuing onto the boards, is fair to good. The binding's corners are damaged, with missing paper, bumping, tears, edgewear, etc., but it is tight and square and in no danger of falling apart. There is smudging, spotting, age-toning, discoloration, etc., on the front and back covers as well as on the pictorial end pages and pages within, which have some corner bends here and there. There appear to be no annotations, marginalia, underlining, scribbles, etc., anywhere within, nor any major damage or flaws in the way of clipped or missing pages, tape repairs, water or other liquid damage, large tears, etc. (note that I did not look closely at each and every page and may have missed something). The three page edges are smooth-cut, uncolored, age-toned / discolored / yellowed, spotted, etc. The book has neither a musty nor smoky odor. This richly illustrated copy of Volume 2 of the 1967 Russian-language anthology Prometheus is being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a very reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am also including a Buy It Now price. Note that I've seen only one copy of this title for sale online, at a price of $65, but that book's condition is very good, unlike this one, so I think my starting price is quite fair. Shipping and handling for the hard-to-find title: $5 to U.S. addresses (via Media Mail). Note that eBay has now instituted a shipping program whereby bidders from outside the U.S. can bid on or buy all sellers' items, and the seller sends everything to an eBay facility in the US for shipping. So far, this seems to be working out well (though one item bought by someone in China never made it to its destination, though eBay very quickly refunded the buyer). I should add that I am not sure eBay is sending items to Russia at this time. If you want this book sent more quickly to you (e.g., via Priority Mail in the U.S.), you must request this asap after winning or purchasing it (or beforehand, if possible), and I will adjust the amount accordingly. I will do my best to send the book out to you no more than 2-3 business days following receipt of payment (that is, when eBay informs me that your payment has been posted to or otherwise cleared in my account). If you are the winner or buyer of this book, PAYMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN ONE WEEK (7 DAYS) FROM THE PURCHASE DATE. If you cannot pay within this time frame, PLEASE contact me asap so we can work something out. I'm very flexible and understanding, but I would appreciate communication from you one way or another. PLEASE NOTE THAT RETURNS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED NOR REFUNDS MADE FOR THIS BOOK, SO PLEASE READ MY DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS I’VE UPLOADED, AND ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT THE CONTENTS OR CONDITION OF THE ITEM. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING! Thanks for looking, and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about this 1967 Russian-language title Prometheus, richly illustrated and with numerous articles on art, literature, culture, and the like. PLEASE NOTE THAT, IF POSSIBLE, I WILL HAPPILY ADJUST SHIPPING CHARGES FOR MULTIPLE PURCHASES!!! (THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO SALES FROM OUTSIDE THE U.S. AT THIS TIME.) ALSO, NOTE THAT, IF APPLICABLE, eBAY WILL ADD ANY APPROPRIATE STATE SALES TAX TO THE INVOICE.
