The Lani Bird 2 satellite soared into a preliminary transfer orbit today en route to an outpost high above the Pacific to serve as a commercial space communications link between North America and the Far East. A towering Delta rocket brilliantly illuminated the early morning darkness as it propelled the Comsat Corporation payload into space right on schedule at 4:55 a.m. (CST).
