Description: 1967 Mauritius 5, 10, 25, 50 Rupees Uncirculated Banknote Specimen Set with COA "MauritiusThe population of Mauritius is composed entirely of immigrants, two thirds of whom are of Indian origin. This explains one unusual characteristic of the country's banknotes: the denominations are expressed in English, Hindi and Tamil. The face of each banknote bears a finely engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. To the left of the portrait the background reveals a fine example of rainbow coloring and non-repeating medallion patterning. This mosaic, continuous and subtly changing, is one of many techniques designed to defeat the forger. The watermark features the now extinct dodo, which came from Mauritius. The bird also appears on the national coat of arms.On the back of each banknote are scenes typical of Mauritius. The 5-rupee note shows a view of the coast with a sailing boat rigged in the traditional island manner. Government House is depicted on the 10-rupee note. The 25-rupee note shows the Trois Mamelles Mountain and portrays an ox cart carrying sugar cane. This crop is vital to the Mauritian economy, for sugar accounts for about 70 percent of exports. And on the 50-rupee note is a view of the capital, Port Louis, seen from its busy harbor, where about one and a half million tons of sugar are shipped each year.
