Description: Here's a wonderful investment-grade 1964 Topps football rookie card featuring quarterback Mike Taliaferro of the AFL's New York Jets! Taliaferro played his college ball at Illinois and was drafted by the NFL's Giants and AFL's Jets in the 1963 pre-merger drafts. He signed with the Jets and backed up Dick Wood for two seasons and started five games in 1965 until a newly-drafted rookie, Joe Namath, took over and banished him to the back-up job. Taliaferro moved on to the Boston Patriots from 1968 through 1970 and finished up with Buffalo as a reserve in 1970. His best year was 1969 when he started all 14 games for the Patriots and made the Pro Bowl. Topps 1964 football set consists of 176 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2", with the set marking a run of four straight years that Topps issued cards of American Football League (AFL) player cards. Card fronts feature white borders with small red stars outlining the color photo. The player's name, team and position are in a black box beneath the photo; each reverse identifies the card number, vital statistics, a short biography, the player's record for the past year and his career, and a cartoon-illustrated question-and-answer section. The set is anchored by Nick Buoniconti (#3), Jack Kemp (#30), George Blanda (#68), Len Dawson (#96), Don Maynard (#121), Lance Alworth (#144), The key rookie cards in this set are Tommy Addison (#1), Daryle Lamonica (#31), Bobby Bell (#90), Buck Buchanan (#92) and John Hadl (#159). Short prints include Blanda, Dawson, Kemp, Jim Otto (#148) and Fred Williamson (#152). The first card in the set, Tommy Addison, and the last card, a checklist, are often the victims of rubber band wear. This attractive card will make a terrific addition to any collection.
