Description: Satirical 'In the Pope We Hope' tokens were given out by Robert Bashlow in 1961 to express the concern of political activists that Kennedy, as U.S. President, would take orders from the Pope. Kennedy managed to strike a nerve among some American Protestants given that he was the first Roman Catholic president. The enigmatic entrepreneur Bashlow crafted these to possibly capitalize on the anti-Catholic sentiment of the time. They were struck in London by John Pinches. Why they were ironically dated 1963, the year of JFKs assassination, is not clear, but suggests that perhaps by then, the full 'effects' of his administration would come to fruition.
