Notable graduates of 1961: Ray Oxendine - Ray Oxendine, a 1961 graduate of Catawba College and a resident of Maxton, has created a scholarship at his alma mater to ensure the Oxendine legacy remains a part of Catawba College for generations to come. This scholarship, named after the Oxendine family, is exclusively for Native American students, particularly those of Lumbee or Catawba Indian heritage, who are deemed worthy by the selection committee. Ray Oxendine and his identical twin sister were among the eight children of Tom and Georgia Oxendine. Raised in a tight-knit extended family in a rural farming area near Pembroke, N.C., Ray was inspired by his elder brother, Dr. Joseph Oxendine '52, who served as the former chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and also attended Catawba College. Dr. William Guy Rich - Recipient of the O.B. Michael Award. The O. B. Michael Award has been awarded every year since 1938 by the Catawba College Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. This award is bestowed upon a College graduate who has made a remarkable impact on both the College and the broader community. Rich, who obtained his master's degree from Wake Forest College (which is now known as Wake Forest University) and his doctoral degree from the College of William & Mary, is now a retired electronics engineer from the Naval Surface Weapons Center.
