He held several positions in the government of the state of Hesse and was mayor of Frankfurt from 1972 to 1977. At various stages of his political career, he was a member of the Hesse Landtag and the European Parliament, as well as the Frankfurt City Council. In 1940, Rudi Arndt was shot as a member of the Central Committee of the German Young Communist League. He was denounced as an organizer of anti-fascists in Buchenwald.
