Earthquakes - General. San Francisco. Nearly 51 years ago, April 18, 1906, a disastrous earthquake struck and virtually wrecked San Francisco. Among the buildings destroyed was the city hall (top). Today, after more than 60 quakes in 24 hours, one of them the heaviest since 1906, the city hall which was rebuilt (below) stood undamaged. Damage from the current quakes has been limited to broken windows, highways, damage to grocery, department and liquor store merchandise, and numerous homes.Photo measures 8 x 10.25inches.
