The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio in a Maserati , ahead of Luigi Musso and Peter Collins , both in Lancia-Ferraris. The legendary Fangio had raced for the Maserati team in 1954 for part of the season until Mercedes was ready to launch their W196 on the Grand Prix circuits in 1957 he was back with the Italien team. Mercedes had withdrawn from racing after the Le Mans disaster in 1955 when one of their cars crashed into the crowd , killing the driver and more than 80 spectators. Fangio then drove for Ferrari in 1956 , although he did not get on well with Enzo Ferrari and in 1957 he was back with Maserati , driving the same car - the 250F - that had helped him to become World Champion in 1954 . The newly extended 6.5 km (4mile) circuit on public roads around the town of Les Essarts, about 12km (7.5miles) south of Rouen was the scene of Fangio's third Grand Prix victory of 1957.
