Description: This 5 3/8” x 7 5/8” 34-page publication is entitled Political Conventions Handbook 1956. The publisher was The Masthead Corporation, but there may have been some tie-in with NBC as there is an article about their coverage team. There are scorecards for both the Democratic and Republican parties allowing one to keep track of the delegate voting for each ballot as the conventions preceded. What is especially interesting about this publication is that it was produced not long after t.v. Stations began televising conventions in their entirety, not just their highlights as they do now. This handbook, then, becomes a useful guideline to those intently following the proceedings as they moved along. There are stories discussing delegates, the presidency, the vice-presidency, tight races in the past, etc. Basically, an introduction to the American public that was generally unfamiliar with the workings of a political convention. There is no mention of Dwight Eisenhower or Adlai Stevenson, who eventually went on to win their parties’ respective nominations. In near fine condition with no tears except for one minor chip on the back cover.
