Description: Handsome fold-out 1956 Esso road map of New York, printed more than 66 years ago. The map opens to 34" x 24" and has great detail on old highway alignments in the Empire State, with cartography by the General Drafting Company. There are maps of Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties, and the Finger Lakes Region, as well as inset plans of Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Niagara Falls. The map was published by the Esso Standard Oil Company. It is dated 1956-57 in the legend and copyrighted © 1956. The colorful cover artwork shows the Grand Canyon of the East in Letchworth State Park. The map labels the fictitious town of "Agloe" — a "copyright trap" placed on Esso road maps during the 1930s and 1940s. The purpose behind using this nonexistent town was to reveal if rival mapmakers were copying the information. The name "Agloe" was a scramble of the initials of Otto G. Lindberg (founder of the General Drafting Company) and his assistant Ernest Alpers. They located the town at a dirt-road intersection north of Roscoe, in the Catskills. Condition: This map is in very good, lightly used condition, with no rips, tears, or writing. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. Buy with confidence!
