Description: 1955 The Cub, Chamberlain High School, Chamberlain, South Dakota Yearbook. Chamberlain is located in Brule County. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River. Chamberlain is home to the South Dakota Hall of Fame and the 50 foot tall Dignity Statue. The City of Chamberlain was named after Selah Chamberlain, a railroad director of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The City is called "Earth Dwelling" in Lakota. Photos 1 and 2 show the front cover and Title Page. Photo # 3 shows the High School as it was in 1955. Photo # 4 shows the Table of Contents. Photo # 5 shows the Student Body Officers. Photos 6 thru 11 show all the Senior Class Members. Photos 12 thru 14 show the Homecoming Activities. Photo # 15 shows the Letterman Club. Photos 16 and 17 show some Snap Shots of the Day. The last photo shows the Dignity of Earth and Sky located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain. This picture is not in the yearbook, but just put there for reference. The 50 foot stainless statue by artist aureate, Dale Claude Lamphere depicts an indigenous woman in a Plains style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples. Assisting Lamphere were sculptors Tom Trople, Jim Maher, Andy Roltgen and Grant Standard. Albertson Engineering of Rapid City, South Dakota, ensured the sculpture would endure the strong winds common in the area. I would add that the Star Quilt is very appropriate gift as the Lakota Indians for over 4,000 years studied the stars and identified the North Star, scientific name of Polaris which is in the constellation Ursa Minor and has been used for navigation for thousands of years by people around the world as the star pretty much remains in the same place. In traditional Lakota star knowledge, Polaris is named "Wičháȟpi Owáŋžila". This translates to "The Star that Sits Still". This name comes from a Lakota story in which he married Tȟapȟúŋ Šá Wíŋ, "Red Cheeked Woman". However, she fell from the heavens, and in his grief Wičháȟpi Owáŋžila stared down from "waŋkátu" (the above land) forever.
