Description: ELMIRA COLLEGE The First 100 Years By W. Charles Barber 1955 McGraw-Hill Book Company New York Hardcover & Dust Jacket 290 pp When it comes to colleges in the northeaster United States, Elmira College likely isn't one of the top higher education institutions that comes to mind. Maybe it should be though. First conceived by a group of men ("Friends of Education") in 1851 with the intention of creating a college that would grant degrees to women; these degrees would be equal to the degrees given to men at the time. That in itself was huge; no women were expected to attend college in the mid-19th century in the United States. The college became a reality in 1855, hence "the first 100 years" subtitle for the book was published in 1955. The early days of Elmira College makes for an interesting story, about the people who made it happen, the educators, administrators, and others connected with the school over the years. One of the college's most notable alumni was Olivia Langdon Clemens, wife of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Speaking of Mark Twain, Elmira College has an extensive Mark Twain archive and is one of the only two centers for Mark Twain Studies in the world. e octagonal study from Quarry Farm in which Twain wrote many of his most widely read novels: Life on the Mississippi, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is located on campus. The book contains 17 plate illustrations, with numerous photographs of people connected with the college over the years. (The photo of Anna M. Bronson, the college's first preceptress looks uncannily like British actress Maggie Smith.) A scarce book now, this is a nice copy with a complete and intact dust jacket showing the original price of $4.75. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
