Large AIR MAIL label issued by Capital Airlines advertising their Lockheed Constellation airliners is tied to the card. Sender was Mildred Routch, who wrote almost daily to her fiancé, Lt. Joe P. Kemp, while he was stationed at an Army base in Germany. Around this time, Mildred was working for National Airlines or Capital Airlines (or, possibly, both) and was based at Washington, D.C.’s National Airport, which was — and remains — on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, just across from the capital city and less than a mile downstream from the Pentagon.
