1951 Bowman Baseball - #235 Jack "Lucky" Lohrke - New York Giants

Description: 1951 Bowman Baseball - #235 Jack "Lucky" Lohrke - New York GiantsOn the Player - Jack Wayne “Lucky” Lohrke (1924-2009): Jack Lohrke was an MLB third baseman for the New York Giants (1947–1951), and the Philadelphia Phillies (1952–1953). His career slash line is .242/.327/.375. Lohrke’s nickname “Lucky” (which he did not like) was in response to surviving multiple near-death experiences. As a US soldier in World War II, he survived a troop train crash that killed three and injured dozens more. He survived the D-Day Normandy landings, the Battle of the Bulge and extensive combat throughout Europe, including having the soldier next to him killed on four occasions. Returning to the United States after WWII, Lohrke was bumped at the last moment from a military transport plane scheduled to fly from Camp Kilmer, New Jersey to his home in Los Angeles. The plane crashed, killing everyone on board. After the war, Lohrke resumed his baseball career that was put on hold for the war efforts. On June 24, 1946, Lohrke was a passenger on the team bus carrying the team as it traveled toward Bremerton, Washington, to begin a road trip. His strong performance had earned him a promotion to the AAA PCL’s San Diego Padres, but the team was unable to contact him as he was in transit between cities. The team business manager contacted the police along the route and asked that they relay a message to Lohrke, which they did when the team stopped for dinner. Lohrke, under orders to report immediately to the Padres, removed his gear from the bus, said goodbye to his teammates, and hitched rides back to Spokane. Later that evening, the team bus broke through a guard rail on a mountain pass, plunged down a hill, and crashed. Of the 15 players on it, nine were killed. This crash remains the deadliest in baseball history. On the Card - There is a slight crease on the card front, moving from Lohrke's elbow to his first name. On the Set - The 1951 Bowman baseball card set is a popular vintage baseball card set that was released by Bowman Gum, Inc. The set includes 324 cards featuring many of the top players from the time period, including stars such as Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, and Willie Mays. For many, the 1951 Bowman set is the most popular of all Bowman baseball card sets. The cards measure 2-1/16" by 3-1/8" and feature a full-color player likeness on the front, with a white border. The fronts were created using press photographs enhanced by painted color, and embellished by the player’s name caption. The back of the card includes the player's statistics, biographical information, and a brief write-up about the player.
