George Taliaferro (January 8, 1927 - October 8, 2018) (HB/TB/QB/DB) was the first African-American player to be drafted by any NFL team in the history of the league. George helped lead the Indiana University Hoosiers to their only undefeated Big Ten Conference championship in 1945 and earned All-American honors. The Chicago Bear selected Taliaferro in the 13th round of the 1949 NFL Draft, but he opted to play for the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference, where he spent one season (1949). In 1950, he joined the New York Yanks (1950-1951) of the NFL, and then played for the Dallas Texans (1952), Baltimore Colts (1953-1954) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1955). In six seasons in the NFL, Taliaferro was named to three NFL Pro Bowl appearances. He played 72 professional games, amassing 2,226 rushing yards on 498 attempts and 1,300 receiving yards on 95 completions. He passed for 1,633 yards and ten touchdowns, completing 92 passes on 284 attempts. George was used on special teams, punting for 6,339 yards on 169 punts, returned 36 punts for 319 yards and one touchdown and returned 95 kicks for 2.035 yards. He scored 168 total points on 28 all-purpose touchdowns. Defensively, he had four fumble recoveries and four interceptions for 78 return yards. George Taliaferro was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.
